nike 50th: never done breaking barriers (Joan Benoit Samuelson)

People used to think women couldn’t run distance. That they weren’t strong enough. That their uteruses would fall out if they did. During the 1984 Olympics, Joan Benoit Samuelson silenced critics with her historic win at the first-ever marathon event for women.

Joan broke barriers 40 years ago. Athletes like Tatyana McFadden, Yulimar Rojas and Caster Semenya are facing, and overcoming, monumental barriers on the track today.

Nike inspired runners to continue Joan’s legacy with the Breaking Barriers Challenge on the NRC app.

Runners from around the world were invited to join Joan in breaking their own barriers and working together toward a collective distance goal of 500,000 km in seven days. In less than two days, NRC runners crushed that goal.

The final count: 2,402,995 km.
